Milan Spring 2009: Versace

Get ready for a hot, hot, hot Spring! Short dresses dominated the runway at Versace in every color and style from bubbly-shy to slick and chic. Golds were a main trend either in a croc-embossed skin or shimmering materials. My favorite detail were the cute hearts on the dresses, which were actually the zippers turned into the shape of a heart. So adorable! I am so in love with this entire collection.

Karl Lagerfeld sure knows how to create silhouettes for every season. For his Spring collection, the bubble skirt was the accent piece with laser cut-outs and lots of lace and layers. Very feminine and very chic. The color palette was mostly in taupe, black and icy blue and was romanticised with the soft pinks and reds of the two stunning nude dresses which had large roses sewn onto them.

“It was an exotic tour in Acapulco, the Americas, Miami,” explains Gucci’s designer Frida Giannini about her collection. “It was interesting to bring back the idea of the tailoring from menswear and mix it with a shorter, softer silhouette. The common idea of the entire collection is the prints and the color, which are so strong. It is all in the same attitude.” Indeed, the spring collection brought many prints like the Hawaiian-print capris, safari and exotic bird prints. Gold hardware and bright large bags were the accessories alongside bondage platforms. Beautiful long chiffon gowns closed the show in stunning colors such as royal blue, lavender and prints. Bright, fresh and modern, this collection will surely be a sell-out.
Dangerous Footwear: Models Fall at Prada Show

Well, I guess I wasn’t the only one who could not concentrate on the Prada Spring 2009 show because of the intense fear that the models would permanently injure themselves. Many critics cited the extreme footwear as a “giant distraction from the clothes.” Two models actually fell on the runway and many more stumbled. According to Prada, the hazardous shoes would slippery because the models wore them with socks. Just because of the socks?
One of the models says to Telegraph newspaper, “I was having a panic attack, my hands were shaking. The heels were so high. Some of the girls were crying backstage they were so scared.” Poor models!
But a big applause goes to all of them, especially the ones that fell and then got back on their feet with their heads held high. Below is a short video of one of the girls falling.

“It was primitivism,” said Miuccia Prada after her Spring 2009 collection show. According to her, the pieces from this collection actually exist in the female subconscious. Bras, skirts and aprons were creatively made to fit and even though it may have seen like a mess, looking closer one would realize that the collection is surprising wearable. Pencil skirts paired with loose scoop-neck tanks were very chic and it was the perfect way to prove that simple and easy is just as sexy; primitive and raw sexy. “These are the basic staples in a woman’s life,” Prada says. Well, the clothes may have been basic, although there was nothing basic about the elegant Italian fabrics, but the shoes were centuries away from anything “basic.” “Those were fantasy,” Miuccia continues. Well, fantasy or not, I could not concentrate much on the collection as my heart was beating so fast being afraid that one of the models would fall and injure herself. Touch, enjoy and even dream about them but beware as this shoe fantasy is not for wear. However, you cannot deny that Prada’s look into the female subconscious is a success story; practicality and dangerous footwear are a definite female combo desire, regardless of their opposing nature.
Milan Spring 2009: Giorgio Armani

This collection truly shows why Giorgio Armani is one of the greatest designers ever. Classified by critics as one of his “sexiest seasons in ages,” the spring 2009 collection combined fantasy and elegance into one. The show began with two-button blazers and satin striped pants and ended with glamorous flowing dresses fit for a princess. The colors palette was sensual with soft pinks, whites, nudes and the satin materials only escalated the dreamy appeal. The clothes were sexy but professional and any woman can see herself in each and every one of these beautiful pieces. My favorite? Although, I am lusting after everything, I cannot help but fall in love at first sight with the mermaid-like long dresses at the end which were stunningly romantic. This will surely be a show to remember forever! Absolute beauty and grace! You can watch the full show below with the two videos.

Milan Spring 2009: D&G by Dolce & Gabbana

What a fun and fresh collection! The Spring 2009 collection was in nautical style with a touch of French 1929 chic. Beautiful dresses, minis and shorts romanticized by a large rose on the neck or as a belt came down the runway. The music was by Grace Jones “La vie en rose,” which was originally sung by the beautiful and most charming Madame Edith Piaf. High waist, scarves and silky materials were the main accents. Stefano Gabbana said in an interview, which is also available in video below, “The inspiration for this collection is the French Riviera. Every year there is a big party in Cannes. It is so fun. The last one was in May during the film festival. And we said with Domenico “Why don’t we do a collection for D&G like French Riviera.”" So, fall in love and enjoy the collection below listening to La Vie En Rose.

Lyrics to La Vie En Rose
